Funded Opportunity to Co-Found a Technology-Enabled Book Printing Company
GAUTENG, SOUTH AFRICA – 23 April 2026 – Startup Picnic Venture Studio, in partnership with Bula Buka Publishers, has announced a funded opportunity to co-found and build a book printing company in South Africa.

This opportunity is aimed at an experienced and motivated Print Operator / Production Lead who will take a founding role in establishing and running a new printing operation from the ground up.
The venture forms part of a broader ecosystem powered by iZwily.com, a unified ordering and ERP platform designed to connect authors, publishers, and bookstores through streamlined production and fulfilment workflows. Through this system, books are produced based on real purchase orders and distributed into major South African retail channels, including Exclusive Books, Bargain Books, Van Schaik, and Takealot.
This printing company and iZwily.com form part of a broader initiative called BookVentures, a portfolio of ventures focused on building the infrastructure for African publishing, distribution, and intellectual property scaling.
Importantly, the printing operation is designed not only as a traditional production facility, but as the foundation of a technology-enabled printing and fulfilment business, evolving toward a fully integrated print-on-demand and digital production system.
The Opportunity
The selected candidate will co-found and lead the establishment of a book printing company, taking full responsibility for building operational capability from scratch.
Key responsibilities include:
- Advising on and selecting printing equipment (digital and/or offset)
- Designing and implementing end-to-end production workflows (pre-press, press, finishing, fulfilment)
- Establishing and managing production operations and teams
- Implementing print-on-demand (POD) capabilities, including the ability to print single-copy orders (e.g., 1 book per order)
- Designing systems that connect printing output directly to incoming bookstore and publisher orders
- Integrating printing operations with iZwily’s ordering and ERP platform
- Ensuring scalable, efficient, and high-quality book production
This is a funded founding opportunity, offering the chance to earn equity participation and long-term upside aligned with the growth of the business.
Candidate Profile
Startup Picnic is seeking a dynamic, experienced, and highly motivated individual with strong expertise in both book printing operations and technology-enabled production systems.
Minimum requirements:
- Proven experience in book printing operations (digital and/or offset)
- Strong understanding of production workflows and print management
- Ability to set up and scale a printing operation from scratch
- Experience with or understanding of print-on-demand systems
- Technical knowledge of printing machinery and production processes
Preferred attributes:
- Entrepreneurial mindset with the ability to build from the ground up
- Strong leadership and operational execution capability
- Familiarity with technology-driven printing and distribution systems
- Ability to thrive in a startup and venture-building environment
- Interest in building systems that bridge manufacturing and software
Application Requirement
Interested candidates are required to submit a short proposal (maximum 1,000 words) outlining:
What they would do if given R250 000 to start a small book printing shop.
The proposal must include:
- How they would set up the printing operation
- Equipment and workflow design
- How they would implement print-on-demand capability (including single-book printing per order)
- How they would ensure operational efficiency and scalability
- Their approach to building a system that can evolve into a technology-enabled printing business
Strategic Vision
This initiative forms part of a broader effort to modernise South Africa’s publishing infrastructure by connecting demand, production, and distribution into a single integrated system.
By linking real-time bookstore demand through iZwily to printing operations, the model enables:
- Reduced inefficiencies in traditional publishing supply chains
- Faster turnaround times for publishers and bookstores
- Scalable print-on-demand production based on actual market demand
- Improved access for independent authors and publishers to retail shelves
Books produced through this system will reach leading retail channels including Exclusive Books, Bargain Books, Van Schaik, and Takealot.
Enterprise & Supplier Development (ESD)
This initiative also forms part of a broader Enterprise and Supplier Development (ESD) programme aimed at strengthening local SME participation in the publishing and printing value chain.
The programme supports:
- Development of a new SME in the printing sector
- Strengthening of local supply chain capabilities
- Skills development and operational capacity building
- Long-term supplier integration within the book industry
